There are now 11 candidates for New Mexico State University’s next athletics director. Larry Lujan, who chairs the NMSU search committee, announced Tuesday the list of candidates had been narrowed from the original 48 applicants to 11.

“I think the number of applications we’ve received and the qualifications we’ve seen in these individuals shows that this is a very desirable position, and it has attracted top-quality talent from across the nation,” Lujan said.

NMSU elected not to utilize a search firm during the process, but actively promoted the job opening nationwide. A 15-person search committee representing the university’s faculty and staff, as well as community members, is in the process of reviewing the candidates, including:

  • John Cordova, sports management group director, Coca-Cola
  • Anthony Hernandez, deputy athletics director, University of Miami
  • Rory Hickok, deputy athletics director, University of Nevada
  • Gerard Koloskie, former deputy director of athletics/senior associate athletics director, University of Nevada, Las Vegas
  • Mario Moccia, director of athletics, Southern Illinois University
  • Marlin Musch, director of college, amateur and junior player development, Nike
  • George Nelson, associate athletics director, U.S. Air Force Academy
  • Ronald Prettyman, athletics director, Indiana State University
  • James Sarra, deputy director of athletics, University of Texas at San Antonio
  • Christopher Walker, associate athletic director/development, Washington State University
  • Matthew Whisenant, deputy director of the athletic department, University of Wyoming

NMSU President Garrey Carruthers said he hoped the committee would have a group of finalists for NMSU’s new athletics director by the end of the fall semester, with the new person able to start as soon as Jan. 1, 2015.
